Ever since Bolt was a young pup, he had lived in an adoption center. Despite this, he didn't mind. He was always happy, and playful, and very loving. Then a young girl came in named Penny, and she chose him to take home. That's how Penny became Bolt's protector, and he became hers. Flash forward a few years, and Penny was working in the TV business. She was an actress, and so was Bolt. They featured in a show about them 'rescuing the day' against Dr. Calico, his arch nemisis. Although Penny knew this was just TV, Bolt did not. He thought he really did have super powers, and he's true purpose really was to save the world. This was all wrong though.[break][break]
One day, Penny was leaving set, and couldn't bring Bolt with him. While he was gone, several cats came in to tease Bolt as they usually do, playing along to his game of 'saving the day'. They taunted him, saying he and Penny have escaped, but Dr. Calico will get them again. Soon the next day arrives, and Bolt and Penny are back in action. Except this time, Penny is captured in a trap by Dr. Calico. When Bolt tries to save her, he's grabbed and put into a cage. When they put him back in his trailer, the cats come to taunt him again, only for Bolt to dash out of the room, following the sound of Penny's cries which are actually recordings from the sound editor.[break][break]
Bolt races to the scene, and comes face ot face with a window. When he tries to break it using his 'super powers' he instead knocks himself out. He wakes up in a box, in New York, on the other side of the country. Bolt then spots what looks like the cage Penny was captured in, only for it to be a porta potty. Soon Bolt meets a group of pigeons and demands they bring him to the 'green eyed man'. The pigeons assume someone different and instead bring him to Mittens, a cat who is currently ruling over the pigeons causing them to bring her half their food in return for their protection.[break][break]
Bolt then tackles her, and holds her over traffic, threatening to drop her if she doesn't tell him where Penny is. Mittens assumes his crazy, and but tells him she'll bring him to Penny when she pots the 'hollywood' tag on his collar. Mittens then brings him to a dumpster where she digs out a map, and tells him that Penny is in California. Bolt says he won't let her go till he sees Penny. Seeing that she has no choice, Mittens and Bolt begin their trip to California.[break][break]
Along the way, whilst hungry and slightly injured, Bolt and Mittens find an area of RV's and Mittens teaches Bolt how to beg, which gives them both food. While begging, a hamster from one of trailers recognizes Bolt and rolls out to meet him. The hamster introduces himself as Rhino, and shows to be a big fan of Bolt. Bolt decides he can tag along, much to Mitten's horror who doesn't want to leave. Despite this, they leave anyway.[break][break]
As the trip goes on, Mittens begins to learn the truth that Bolt thinks he has superpowers and he doesn't. While trying to prove to him that he's not a real superhero, she also teaches him how to be a real dog, likes he's never been before. It's not long before all three of them are bonding as they cross the country to return to Penny.[break][break]
Finally, they make it to Hollywood where Bolt and Mittens have a fight about staying or continuing the search. Mittens wants Bolt to stay, saying Penny doesn't love him, and everything there is fake. But Bolt goes anyway, and Mittens despite everything follows him.[break][break]
They manage to break into the building, and Bolt runs through the halls, where he sees Penny, but comes to a stop when he sees her caring for a new dog. One that looks just like him. Mittens sits on the rafters watching the whole thing. Turns out it was a training session with a new dog, and Penny is still very upset. They begin setting up the set, and filming an episode where Penny is captured and in the grips of Dr. Calico. When Dr. Calico's henchmen come up to the fake Bolt with electrified gloves, he runs away scared, knocking down a torch in the process. This starts a fire, and the crew goes wild. [break][break]
Penny, still in the ropes that keep her trapped, is still in the building calling for help. Mittens finds Bolt as he's about to leave, telling him that Penny does love him, and that he was wrong. This almost leads to another argument but Bolt here's Penny's cries for help and he races to save her. Penny manages to escape, and her and Bolt run into each other while in the fire. Penny grows weak from smoke inhalation but tells Bolt to 'zoom zoom', Bolt leads her to a vent, but she collapses while in there. Bolt stays by her side, refusing to leave her. Turning to the vent, Bolt stands in his 'super bark' stance and barks loudly through the vent. No one hears him. But the firemen outside tell everyone to be quiet. Bolt barks again, and firemen are able to locate their location. They pull Penny out, and Bolt lays with her on the stretcher. As they leave, Penny's Mom quits for her before they are taken to the hospital.[break][break]
It's from that point that the TV show hires a new actress, and uses a new trained dog for the show that now features 'aliens'. Penny has settled down, taking Bolt, Mittens, and Rhino as her pets, all of them living a normal, healthy life. And that's what it was.[break][break]
